The Role

Trainee Quantity Surveyors are required to support the commercial teams on various projects based within Manchester.

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, you will learn the trade ‘on the job’ under the supervision of an experienced professional and skilled mentor.

Duties/responsibilities:

Reporting into the Project Commercial Lead, the Apprentice/Trainee QS will undertake and learn site specific commercial activities, taking responsibility for minor project packages but mainly shadowing their line manager to progress their understanding of the role with the view of taking on greater responsibilities over time.

Initial site responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Measurement from drawings and specifications
  • Working up measurement into a pricing schedule or Bill of Quantities in accordance with Standard Methods of Measurement
  • Principles of construction
  • Tender price reviews
  • Site measurement
  • Preparation of interim and final account measurement
  • Assistance with procurement of sub-contractors
  • Management of small value sub contract packages
  • Cost and value analysis of sub contract packages
  • Construction methodology/sequencing
  • Assist with estimating and cost planning
  • Prepare tender documents
  • Support the tender reporting process
  • Support and assist the procurement process
  • Attend site and commercial meetings as required
  • Support health and safety policy and standards

Requirements:

  • Strong work ethic
  • Good team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Methodical approach
  • A Levels' or equivalent standard
  • Currently registered on a formally recognised Quantity Surveying course and heading towards qualification (desirable)
  • Working towards professional grade membership of recognised and relevant professional institution (desirable)
  • Full Clean driving licence
  • Able to achieve demanding time and quality targets
  • Computer literate with word and excel
  • Good time keeping
  • Smart and presentable
  • Desire to learn and develop effective commercial practices within a project ensuring
  • Desire to understand timely and accurate applications for payment compliant with the contract, Housing Grants Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 if appropriate
  • Desire to understand Cash Management
  • Desire to understand proper and timely notification of Contract or Insurance events
  • Desire to understand Contractual correspondence
